The credits are the first, says DelAgua, to be tagged by standards body Verra and cover projects in Rwanda, Sierra Leone and The Gambia. This comes after the UK-based organisation secured the necessary Letters of Authorizations (LOAs) from the three host countries for four projects. According to aviation carbon solutions company Azzera, the total number of CORSIA-tagged projects now stands at seven and marks continued progress in the roll out of eligible credits under the scheme. However, KOKO, another potential provider of CORSIA-eligible credits through African clean cooking projects, has had to shut down operations, citing regulatory challenges in Kenya.

The LOAs secured by DelAgua ensure compliance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and affirm the host countries’ formal approval of the emission reductions and consent for their use towards CORSIA obligations. To further enhance buyer confidence, DelAgua reports it has worked with a number of partners to provide CORSIA insurance policies, which protects against the risk of Article 6 revocation due to a failed Corresponding Adjustment. This, it says, provides an extra layer of protection to ensure airlines and other buyers can rely on the efficacy and quality of the credits throughout the CORSIA compliance cycle.

“Our projects have passed rigorous eligibility criteria, ensuring additionality, transparency and avoidance of double counting,” assures DelAgua.

Added CEO Euan McDougall: “We believe that when done with integrity and a focus on quality, cookstove projects can be both scientifically credible and socially transformative. Securing CORSIA eligibility unlocks high demand for our credits and enables us to raise the crucial funding needed to deploy more stoves and reach more underserved rural households who would not otherwise have access to clean cooking.”

The company says the demand for its 4.7 million CORSIA credits – called Eligible Emissions Units (EEUs) – has been strong, with a large volume having been pre-sold to airlines and intermediaries, but a spot inventory is available for interested parties.

A further 3 million credits are anticipated to be tagged in Q2 2026 for Phase 1 (2024-2026). The demand for these has also been strong, it reported.

Going forward, DelAgua expects to issue more than 3 million CORSIA eligible credits annually. “CORSIA is entering its compliance phase and demand is accelerating while supply of eligible credits remains limited,” it says. “We invite airlines looking to meet their compliance targets, as well as voluntary carbon market buyers seeking credits that deliver real, measurable emission reductions and community impact, to partner with DelAgua.”

To date, DelAgua has distributed more than 2 million stoves across Rwanda, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.

Commenting on applying the first labels confirming CORSIA eligibility to the DelAgua 4.7m credits, Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos said: “This is a practical example of how Verra infrastructure is evolving to meet global climate goals, supporting real-world action at scale. As the first labelled credits of their kind in Verra’s system, these CORSIA-eligible credits demonstrate what’s possible when strong standards, national governments and market actors work together.”

Under CORSIA rules, any carbon credits issued by Verra from 2021 onwards must carry an Article 6 Authorised – International Mitigation Purposes label to be eligible. To ensure credits meet these requirements, Verra says it is working with host governments to review their LOAs and confirm that all necessary details are clearly specified, such as eligible vintages, volumes and other key approval terms.

Azzera said the arrival of the new African clean cooking carbon credits provided welcome near-term relief to the CORSIA Phase 1 market.

“However,” it added, “eligibility timelines, regulatory approvals and the relatively limited number of qualifying projects continue to shape overall market dynamics. As compliance demand builds, these factors are expected to remain key drivers of supply availability and pricing behaviour over the medium to long term.”

As of early February, Azzera reports that generic Phase 1 contracts continued to trade within a relatively stable range. “Pricing reflects a balance between the injection of newly tagged supply and steadily increasing compliance demand as airlines progress towards their Phase 1 obligations,” it said.

It advised airlines preparing for Phase 1 compliance to engage early as newly tagged volumes are being absorbed quickly and forward planning was essential given the relatively concentrated nature of eligible supply.

While DelAgua has successfully injected CORSIA EEUs into the market, another major African clean cooking technology company, KOKO Networks, has abruptly halted its extensive operations in Kenya following a reported refusal by the government to issue a LOA that would have granted approval for KOKO to sell carbon credits internationally.

Like DelAgua, KOKO had identified the CORSIA credits market as an important revenue source to support its business model, which has sold heavily subsidised cooking stoves and bioethanol to more than 1.3 million low-income families in Kenya. The company employed over 650 people, now laid off, and had many more agents and distributors of its clean fuel, which sold in 3,000 automated refilling machines located in convenience stores around the country. The cookstoves and clean fuel helped a transition away from traditional cooking with charcoal and firewood, which caused deforestation and health problems.

Founded in 2014 and commercially launched in 2019, KOKO had generated around 6 million tonnes of Gold Standard certified carbon credits annually through its operations and raised debt and equity finance from a range of international investors, including Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund.

In March 2025, the World Bank’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) issued a guarantee of $180 million to insure and protect KOKO’s carbon credits against the political risk of host governments failing to uphold their legally binding commitments, including the provision of corresponding adjustments under Article 6. The guarantee was meant to enable KOKO to expand its operations to serve 3 million additional customers by December 2027.

A report in Kenya’s Business Daily said KOKO, now in administration, is expected to file a claim with MIGA, alleging breach of contract by the Kenyan government, with the World Bank unit in turn seeking compensation from the country.

The report also quotes a government minster saying the reason for not granting KOKO a LOA was due to the number of credits the company wanted to sell would take up the entire share Kenya could claim from the global markets and lock out other firms in the country looking to sell eligible credits. The minister said attempts to address the issue had failed and criticised KOKO’s business model.

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true"
