Along with International Airlines Group (IAG) and Air France-KLM, DHL was one of the top three SAF purchasers last year. The freight company also collaborates with airline partners to add significant volumes of SAF in its Scope 3 air operations. DHL Group has just signed a new five-year agreement with IAG Cargo that will enable 240 million litres of SAF to be uplifted at London Heathrow and reduce the lifecycle GHG emissions of DHL Express cargo transported on British Airways flights. DHL has also signed with global online fashion retailer SHEIN, which will adopt DHL’s GoGreen Plus service to support the use of SAF within its air cargo logistics.

During 2025, combining its own and subcontracted operations, DHL delivered a record 775 kt of CO2e reductions and SAF represents, it says, by the far the biggest decarbonisation lever across the DHL Group.

“DHL is the largest non-airline purchaser of SAF globally – giving us a meaningful role in shaping this market,” said a company spokesperson. “We also have a unique perspective on how corporate demand is evolving and we’re focused on backing that with real action.”

DHL spent in the region of €200 million ($230m) on SAF during 2025, with air transport responsible for 65% of its logistics-related GHG emissions. It has a target that by 2030, sustainable fuels make up a 30% share of all air, ocean and road transport fuel.

“The real story behind our progress with SAF is not the percentage points, it’s the shift in mindset across the logistics and aviation ecosystem,” commented Andreas Mündel, SVP Strategy & Operations at DHL Group. “SAF has moved from being a niche alternative to becoming a cornerstone of how global supply chains decarbonise at scale.

“In 2025, we demonstrated what’s possible when you combine long-term commitment with the courage to act early: you send a clear market signal that fuels innovation, unlocks collaboration and accelerates availability.

“Our ambition is not just to use more SAF, it’s to help reshape the aviation landscape so that low-carbon flying becomes the norm rather than the exception.”

Under the new five-year agreement with IAG Cargo, together with a previous 2025 renewal, DHL Express will receive the Scope 3 emissions reductions from around 40 million litres of neat SAF per year, representing a lifecycle GHG emissions reduction of 640,000 tonnes of CO2e. This, says DHL, will cover nearly all of the fuel currently attributed to transporting DHL Express cargo within IAG Cargo’s network.

The collaboration will be supported by a further framework agreement between DHL Global Forwarding and IAG Cargo aimed at strengthening the Group’s cross-divisional strategy to secure reliable and diversified access to sustainable fuels. This could increase the total volume across the DHL Group to over 1 million tonnes of GHG reductions on a lifecycle basis.

“This agreement shows what is possible when two committed SAF users in the industry pool their efforts,” said Travis Cobb, EVP Global Network Operations & Aviation at DHL Express. “It significantly expands our ability to reduce lifecycle GHG emissions on a major trade lane and demonstrates how cross-sector partnerships can contribute towards concrete reductions.”

Added Camilo Garcia Cervera, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at IAG Cargo: “DHL and IAG Cargo have a longstanding relationship and it’s great to see our partnership continue to grow as we work together to deliver more sustainable air freight solutions while we keep global trade moving. Partnerships like these will be critical to scaling the use of sustainable aviation fuel.”

Since 2023, DHL has offered its GoGreen Plus service to customers looking to reduce GHG emissions by leveraging SAF through a book-and-claim insetting mechanism.

In February, DHL Global Forwarding introduced a new GoGreen Plus Base product that delivers a default 10% emissions reduction for all eligible shipments at a fixed flat rate, and is available to every customer.

“You don’t need to invest millions to make a difference. Any business can start small, with just a few extra Euros per shipment and without additional effort,” said Kathrin Brost, VP Global Head of GoGreen Program. “This is a major step forward towards enabling more sustainable supply chains at scale.”

The GoGreen Plus Portfolio also includes a Premium product that provides a 85% emissions reduction through book-and-claim, priced at lane level, and a Select product with tailored decarbonisation solutions with flexible emissions reduction levels for large customers and customised to individual supply chains.

As part of its efforts to explore approaches for reducing carbon emissions associated with air transport, global online fast fashion retailer SHEIN is the latest to adopt DHL’s GoGreen Plus service.

“Working with partners such as DHL allows us to better understand how SAF solutions may be incorporated into air cargo logistics,” said Mustan Lalani, SHEIN’s Head of Sustainability.

Responded John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express: “As a long-term partner in SHEIN’s global logistics network, we are pleased to work together to explore how SAF can be integrated into their air cargo operations.”

SHEIN already has entered into other pilot initiatives and industry collaborations with logistics providers, cargo airlines and industry groups to look at how SAF may support efforts to reduce air cargo lifecycle emissions, the economic feasibility of such efforts and how associated certification and accounting frameworks operate in practice. In 2025 it signed a MoU with Lufthansa Cargo and also piloted the procurement and use of 187.3 tonnes of SAF across 14 Atlas Air charter flights, achieving an estimated emissions reduction of 579.1 tonnes of CO2e.

The China-headquartered SHEIN is also participating in a pilot programme organised by China National Aviation Fuel (CNAF) and the Second Research Institute of Civil Aviation of China (CASRI), which is aimed at bringing together multiple airline and corporate partners, in order to advance SAF adoption in China. Under the initiative, SHEIN plans to procure from Air China Cargo an initial batch of SAF, with traceability mechanisms to track SAF usage and associated emissions reductions. As part of the pilot, CASRI and CNAF will jointly issue certificates based on proof of sustainability documenting SAF volumes used and associated lifecycle emissions reductions relative to conventional jet fuel.

SHEIN has also joined Green Fuel Forward, a World Economic Forum-led campaign focused on accelerating SAF adoption in the Asia-Pacific region. The initiative seeks to raise awareness of SAF, foster collaboration between corporates, airlines and fuel producers, and strengthen the demand signal for SAF in the region through capacity building activities.

<p class="has-vivid-red-color has-text-color has-link-color
