The partners say the facility will serve as a foundation for the first fully integrated SAF supply chain in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and a major step in making the GBA a leading player in the global SAF sector. The facility aims to have an annual capacity of around 450,000 tonnes of SAF and hydrotreated vegetable oil, with waste-based feedstock collection across the GBA; refining and production in Dongguan; that will affect new aircraft around the world, including next-generation supersonic jets. The ICAO CO2 emissions standard was made 10% more stringent and is applicable to new aircraft type designs as of 2031. In addition, a complex more stringent CO2 emissions standard was also adopted that will apply to new deliveries of in-production aircraft types from 2035. A new noise standard will be applicable to new aircraft type designs as of 2029 that will raise the bar by six decibels for large aircraft types and two decibels for smaller ones. As of 2029, potential supersonic aircraft will need to comply with the noise limits that apply to today\u2019s subsonic aircraft.<br><br>The <strong>UK government<\/strong> has <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/publications\/52773\/documents\/294012\/default\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed in a letter<\/a> to the House of Commons Transport Committee that it will include the UK\u2019s share of international aviation emissions in its future legally-binding climate budgets. The government has laid a statutory instrument to formally include these emissions in the nation\u2019s Sixth Carbon Budget (2033-37), all subsequent carbon budgets and the UK\u2019s overall net zero target. \u201cThis legislation means the UK can finally consistently ensure that all its emissions are accounted for and plan mitigation strategies accordingly,\u201d commented the Committee\u2019s Chair, Ruth Cadbury MP.<br><br>Hydrogen-electric aircraft pioneer <strong>ZeroAvia<\/strong> reports the US <strong>Federal Aviation Administration<\/strong> has <a href=\"https:\/\/drs.faa.gov\/browse\/excelExternalWindow\/FR-SCFINAL-2026-05281-0000000000.0001%3Futm_medium%3Demail?modalOpened=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> the special conditions for the company\u2019s 600kW electric engine as a Final Rule to the Federal Register, a major step towards type certification of the company\u2019s electric propulsion system and wider hydrogen-electric powertrain. The special conditions contain the additional safety standards the FAA Administrator considers necessary to establish a level of safety equivalent to that established by existing airworthiness standards.<br><br><strong>American Express Global Business Travel<\/strong> and <strong>Shell Aviation<\/strong> have announced an extended agreement with <strong>Google<\/strong> to source SAF environmental attribute information through the blockchain-enabled, book-and-claim SAF registry <strong>Avelia<\/strong>. The deal will support Google\u2019s ongoing efforts to reduce aviation emissions through sustained SAF investment, says the company. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aveliasolutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Avelia<\/a> reports over 64 million gallons of SAF have so far been injected at 18 airports around the world, with 66 corporations and airlines joining Avelia, and more than 1,300 retirements executed.<br><br>Italy\u2019s national carrier<strong> ITA Airways <\/strong>reports it is expecting to deliver more than 7,100 tons of fuel savings and 22,100 tons of CO2 across 2025 and 2026 as a result of deploying <strong>SITA\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sita.aero\/lp\/flight-optimization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OptiFlight<\/a> AI-powered tool. Rolled across the airline\u2019s fleet, OptiFlight calculates the most efficient climb profile for each flight by adjusting airspeed, acceleration, altitude transitions and climb Mach using predictive analytics, machine learning and 4D weather data. \u201cData-driven insights and artificial intelligence allow us to achieve significant fuel savings and emissions reductions without compromising efficiency or safety,\u201d said Francesco Presicce, ITA Airways\u2019 Chief Innovation and Strategic Projects\/Vision.<br><br>A <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/69b83aa0b84f01b2be53a301\/jet-zero-taskforce-hydrogen-task-and-finish-group-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> from the joint UK government and industry <strong>Jet Zero Taskforce<\/strong> suggests hydrogen-powered aviation could become commercially viable for small aircraft on some routes by 2030, provided supporting infrastructure and regulatory frameworks are developed. Sub-regional aircraft (with fewer than 19 seats) are expected to be capable of supporting the UK\u2019s existing route network, particularly in rural and island regions. Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes offer an adaptable mechanism to provide subsidy for initial operations while the system is still being cost optimised, says the report.<br><br>UK leisure carrier <strong>Jet2.com<\/strong> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jet2.com\/news\/2026\/04\/Jet2_com_achieves_fuel_and_emissions_savings_through_lightweight_paint_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">applied lightweight paint<\/a> to over 80 of its aircraft, which it says accounts for an annual fuel saving of almost a quarter of a million litres, equating to a reduction of over 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The paint, manufactured by <strong>AkzoNobel<\/strong>, has a weight saving of more than 20kg per aircraft. The work has been carried out by aircraft paint specialists <strong>Airbourne Colours<\/strong> and as well as the existing fleet, all of the carrier\u2019s brand-new Airbus A321neo aircraft are being delivered with the paint already applied. The company\u2019s entire fleet will be using it by 2030.<br><br>Dublin-based<strong> Tao Climate <\/strong>has launched a live aviation carbon intelligence dashboard, <a href=\"https:\/\/airos.taoclimate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AirOS<\/a>, which the company says is designed to make the sector\u2019s carbon footprint \u201cvisible, understandable and actionable\u201d. Built using real-world aviation datasets and designed for clarity and usability, the dashboard translates complex carbon information into intuitive, real-time insights, adds the company.<br><br><strong>Emsurge<\/strong>, a technology provider for environmental markets, reports it has successfully completed the first auction of CORSIA Phase 1-labelled eligible carbon credits conducted on its platform. The new Sustainability Innovation Centre based at Discovery Park in Sandwich, Kent, is operated by Clean Planet Technologies, a division of Clean Planet Group. The company says the UK creates 5 million tonnes of waste plastics each year, 80% of which cannot be recycled, such as carrier bags and food packaging film. So claims the not-for-profit Zemo Partnership, which has launched RFAS Aviation, a new voluntary assurance scheme designed to provide independent verification of SAF across the UK supply chain. The initiative builds on the established Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme (RFAS), which Zemo, formerly Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, says is widely used in the road transport sector and has approved 58 companies across the UK and Europe. class=\"blockspare-description\">Following its $24 million funding round in February, Swiss aviation technology company Metafuels has now secured a \u20ac1.92 million ($2.24m) grant from the Dutch government to advance its Turbe eSAF project in the Port of Rotterdam. Awarded to Metafuels\u2019 Dutch subsidiary, the grant comes from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) under the TSE Industry Studies \u2013 Hydrogen &amp; Green Chemistry programme. It will support, says the company, critical project development activities through to final investment decision (FID), including front-end engineering and design (FEED), permitting and consents, and commercial development.
